Guide to Research and Service Opportunities

Many of our majors in Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience find that participating in a research project, community service internship, or other fieldwork experience guides and enhances their career choices after graduation and improves their success if they apply to graduate school. Independent Research

Students are encouraged to review the PSYC 3591/4591 opportunities for the upcoming semester and plan accordingly. View the list of instructors (PDF) sponsoring independent research and their corresponding area of focus.

Honors

The Honors Program in Psychological and Brain Sciences provides undergraduate students with additional opportunities for specialized and advanced study, including an honors seminar and an internship. Submit completed applications to the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department main office.

Honors Eligibility Requirements

In addition to meeting the general requirements stated under University Regulations, in order to be considered for graduation with Special Honors, the student must submit an application to the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department before the beginning of the senior year, take an honors seminar (PSYC 4997 Honors Seminar) and a graduate-level seminar, and complete a research experience (PSYC 3591 Supervised Research Internship or PSYC 4591 Independent Research). The grade-point average in PBS required for graduation with Special Honors is 3.5.

Psi Chi Honors Society

GW’s chapter of the national psychology honors society Psi Chi provides activities to complement and enhance the psychology curriculum. Members can also take advantage of practical experience and networking with peers, as well as adding valuable content to their résumés. Study Abroad Options for Psychological and Brain Sciences Majors

PBS majors have the option to study abroad. PBS majors may apply for any program as long as they meet the eligibility requirements (semesters of school, language proficiency, GPA, etc.).

Students should follow these important steps to make sure eligible coursework is successfully transferred:

Decide on country and program to study abroad.
The GW Office for Study Abroad can provide information for this. Depending on the program/country, students may apply to these programs prior to getting courses approved.
Get PBS courses approved.
The PBS study abroad coordinator, Myeong-Ho Sohn, will review the program and approve the study abroad courses through GW CATS. Note: PBS courses can be reviewed and approved for any GW student going abroad. Visit the GW CATS website to see all PBS courses that have been pre-approved or to submit new course approval requests.
